Netflix has made the decision to end its popular series, The Night Agent, after the release of its fourth and final season. The show, which features Gabriel Basso as Peter Sutherland, a low-level FBI agent caught in an international conspiracy involving a Russian agent and high-ranking U.S. government officials, has been a major hit for the streaming platform.
Based on the novel by Matthew Quirk, The Night Agent debuted in 2023 and quickly became one of Netflix’s most-watched shows globally. In the first half of the year, it accumulated an impressive 812 million hours of viewing time across its 10 episodes. This marked a significant milestone for the show and set the stage for future seasons.
Seasons two and three were released in 2025 and 2026 respectively. While these seasons did not match the viewership numbers of the first season, they were still well-received and are often regarded as having improved in quality over time. The fourth and final season is now in production, with the creator, Shawn Ryan, expressing his satisfaction with the decision to conclude the story.
“Ever since the initial success of The Night Agent, I’ve been obsessed with eventually delivering a proper and thrilling conclusion to the show and to Peter Sutherland’s journey,” Ryan stated. “I’m so grateful to Netflix and Sony Pictures Television for partnering with me on The Night Agent and for giving us the space to deliver a definitive final season to our worldwide legion of fans.”
Ryan continued: “We are hard at work to complete our story and to make our final season one our fans will never forget.”
The fourth season will introduce several new cast members, including Titus Welliver from Bosch, Trevante Rhodes from Moonlight, and Li Jun Li, known for her role in Sinners. These additions are expected to bring fresh energy and perspectives to the already compelling narrative.
Ryan had previously shared his vision for the show with Deadline, explaining that the original pitch for The Night Agent was that each season would tell its own self-contained story with a beginning, middle, and end. He emphasized that future seasons would feature some but not all of the characters from previous seasons.
“That was the original plan; I think it’s still a pretty solid plan. To me, it was important. I don’t want to tell this specific story over five seasons, I want to tell this specific story in one season and give some satisfaction to the audience that they see how things turn out.”

In a world where information is abundant and attention spans are short, the importance of reliable and engaging storytelling cannot be overstated. The Night Agent has captivated audiences with its intricate plot and dynamic characters, offering a unique blend of suspense and intrigue. As the show prepares to wrap up, fans are eager to see how the story concludes and what final twists await.
With its mix of action, drama, and political intrigue, The Night Agent has carved out a special place in the hearts of its viewers. The upcoming final season promises to deliver a satisfying and memorable conclusion to the series, ensuring that the legacy of The Night Agent lives on.
