A Mother’s Journey Through a Medical Emergency
Alyssa Farah Griffin, co-host of The View, has shared a deeply personal story about her son’s recent health crisis. At just two months old, her baby, Justin Patrick Jr., faced a medical emergency that required immediate surgery. This experience has left a lasting impact on the family and highlighted the importance of support during such challenging times.
Griffin revealed the details of her son’s situation through a clip shared with People. She described the operation as “major” and mentioned that her son had to spend time in the intensive care unit (ICU) following the procedure. “My son ended up needing a major operation,” she explained. “I’m actually not going to get into the details only because I will just turn into a puddle talking about it, but he had to get a surgery this weekend.”

Griffin emphasized that she chose not to share the news before the surgery, as she wanted to focus on praying for her son’s safety. “And thank the Lord, it went beyond well,” she said. “The doctor said he’s doing even better than expected, hitting every milestone. He’s going to be great.”
The recovery process has been remarkable. “He’s better, literally less than 24 hours, 12 hours after the surgery,” Griffin added. “He’s smiling, flirting with the nurses. He’s totally his father’s son.”

One of the most touching moments came shortly after the surgery. “I came in at three in the morning. I’d gotten up from the little cot my husband and I were sleeping on together, go to the bathroom and come back, and he saw,” she recalled. “He caught my eyes because he was awake and he giggled, and I was like, ‘It’s the happiest moment of my life. He’s OK, he recognizes mama.’”
Griffin described the emotional struggle of watching her son in such a vulnerable state. “To watch a baby be helpless, but also have to entrust him into someone else’s hands was like… it took every amount of strength that I have just to get through it all,” she said. She expressed deep gratitude for the medical team who cared for her son. “I was grateful to have the support of my husband, and I mused on how important it was to have a supportive partner in such a trying time.”
Griffin and her husband, Justin, have been married since November 2021, and they welcomed their son in February. Their journey as new parents has been filled with both joy and challenges.
Griffin’s co-host, Whoopi Goldberg, also shared the news of her son’s birth on The View in February. She noted that the baby boy weighed 7 pounds and was 19.5 inches long.
After giving birth, Griffin returned to The View two months later, joking about feeling like a “human lighter.” “Little Justin is the most magical thing. All of you who are moms told me,” she admitted. “They said your brain chemistry changes overnight, and it is so true. My world just feels more magical and full, and I’m just so grateful to him.”
This experience has reinforced Griffin’s deep love for her son. “I love him with every fiber of my being and would have sacrificed my own life many times over if it meant keeping him safe and healthy,” she said.
Her story serves as a powerful reminder of the strength and resilience that parents often display when faced with unexpected challenges. It also highlights the importance of community support and the role of healthcare professionals in ensuring the best possible outcomes for newborns.
