A New Chapter for Fifita
The South Sydney Rabbitohs second-rower might have left the Gold Coast Titans over the off-season, but he clearly isn’t finished talking about his former club. His journey with the Titans was marked by challenges, and now, as he continues to build his career with the Rabbitohs, there are clear signs of a positive transformation.
Fifita’s last season in Gold Coast under then coach Des Hasler was an absolute mess. The star found himself dropped from the team, battling an ankle injury, and at one point was even used in the centres despite being a former Queensland State of Origin second-rower. This shift in position was not only unexpected but also raised questions about his role within the team.
Throughout the season, Fifita was in the headlines as looking for a potential release from the middle of the season or earlier onwards. He eventually secured a move at the end of the year, linking up with the South Sydney Rabbitohs and old Brisbane Broncos coach Wayne Bennett. This new chapter has been a turning point for him, as he is slowly turning things around under his former boss.
During Good Friday’s victory over the Canterbury Bulldogs, Fifita had what could be his best game in well over a year. His performance was a clear indicator of the progress he has made since joining the Rabbitohs. After the game, he spoke to ABC Radio and revealed that he is no longer being taken for granted.
“It’s good being down here with Wayne [Bennett] and the boys,” Fifita told the radio network after the game. “And to have the support of a team that loves me, and doesn’t take me for granted.”
This statement hints at deeper issues at Gold Coast, where Fifita was in and out last year. While his ankle injury was the official reason for his struggles, there was constant speculation about other background issues between the second-rower and his coach. These issues seemed to affect his performance and overall morale.
Fifita, who spent five years at Gold Coast, played 90 matches for the club and is now signed with South Sydney through to the end of 2027. This long-term commitment shows his confidence in the new environment and his desire to rebuild his career.
The Titans, who finished at the wrong end of the ladder, have started 2026 at a similarly slow pace under Josh Hannay. They lost their first three games before finally securing a win over the St George Illawarra Dragons, with new second-rower Arama Hau excelling in the process.
Looking ahead, the Gold Coast clash with the Brisbane Broncos on Saturday evening in Round 5 will be an important test for both teams. For the Titans, it’s an opportunity to build momentum and show improvement. For the Rabbitohs, it’s a chance to continue their strong start to the season.
As Fifita continues to adapt to his new surroundings, it’s clear that his time with the Rabbitohs has provided the stability and support he needed. With Wayne Bennett at the helm, he’s finding his footing once again and proving that he still has a lot to offer to the sport.
