Clubs in Panic as Gould Reveals Real PNG Threat

The Impact of Jarome Luai’s Move on the NRL

Canterbury Bulldogs’ football boss, Phil Gould, has highlighted a growing sense of panic among NRL clubs regarding players who are set to come off contract. This concern stems from Jarome Luai’s decision to sign with the PNG Chiefs, a move that has sent shockwaves through the league.

Luai’s agreement with the Chiefs will not take effect until 2028, but his contract with the Tigers included clauses that allowed him to negotiate with the new franchise. Unlike other players, who can only formally negotiate with rival clubs—including the Chiefs—starting in November, Luai’s situation has created an unusual scenario.

The deal was not widely speculated upon until Luai was publicly seen in Port Moresby with Chiefs officials and Papua New Guinea Prime Minister James Marape. This visibility has sparked discussions about the potential for similar moves by other players in the future.

Ripple Effects on the Player Market

Gould noted that the Chiefs’ success in securing Luai has had a “ripple effect” on the NRL player market. He stated that all clubs are now panicking about players coming off contract in the next 12 to 18 months and are trying to get them to re-sign immediately.

“People are going to start taking big risks about re-signing players 18 months in advance,” Gould said on Nine’s 100% Footy.

This shift in strategy is a direct result of the introduction of two new franchises, Perth and PNG, which have altered the dynamics of player management and club concerns about losing talent.

Tax-Free Incentives and Player Mindset

The tax-free incentives offered by the PNG Chiefs are a significant draw for players. However, the prospect of living in a Port Moresby compound could be a deterrent for some.

Sydney Roosters utility Connor Watson discussed this on ABC’s NRL Monday, highlighting how the mindset around players moving to PNG has changed following Luai’s deal.

“When the tax-free dollar thing was first floated around there was a lot of guys saying ‘oh I’m going to go to PNG’… but I think Jarome signing makes it a lot more real than it probably seemed at that point,” Watson said.

He added, “You probably thought, when push comes to shove, would these guys actually go and take the leap?”

Changing Perceptions and Future Implications

Gould echoed this sentiment on 100% Footy, noting that the initial skepticism about players moving to PNG has now faded.

“Everyone was (saying) ‘will people go to PNG?’,” he said. “Jarome Luai signs, now everyone is going to PNG by the sounds of it.”

This shift in perception signals a new era in the NRL, where the influence of player managers and the potential for players to move to new franchises are becoming more prominent.

As the league adapts to these changes, the impact of Luai’s decision will likely continue to shape the strategies of clubs and players alike. The introduction of the PNG Chiefs has not only brought a new team into the competition but has also introduced a new level of competition for talent and resources.
