38,000 Bananas Mistakenly Delivered to Scottish Town

A Surplus of Bananas in Orkney

Orkney, a region known for its traditional dishes like Bere Bannock and clapshot, is about to experience an unusual addition to its local diet. This change comes after a supermarket mistakenly ordered an overwhelming amount of bananas. The error occurred when Tesco in Kirkwall placed an order that was over 10 times larger than intended.

The original order was expected to be around 380kg of bananas, which would have equated to approximately 3,200 individual fruits. However, due to a clerical mistake, the store received 380 wholesale boxes instead. Each box contained roughly 100 bananas, resulting in a total of around 38,000 pieces of fruit.

Kirkwall, the town where this incident took place, has a population of approximately 7,300 people. The surplus of bananas arrived at the weekend, but the usual process of returning the excess to the mainland was not possible due to ferry disruptions caused by high winds.

In response to this unexpected situation, the superstore has started giving away the bananas to community groups and schools in Orkney. Additionally, arrangements have been made to send free bananas to the archipelago’s outer isles.

A Tesco spokesperson stated: “Due to an over-order of bananas to our Kirkwall Superstore, colleagues have been inviting local schools and community groups to collect the fruit to redistribute locally.”

Impact of Weather on Supplies

Ferry disruptions in Orkney, often caused by severe weather conditions, can lead to shortages of essential goods. This banana incident highlights how such disruptions can affect the availability of everyday items in the region.

This is not the first time that Orkney has faced a similar issue. Two years ago, the area was flooded with an excess of Easter eggs due to an ordering mistake. Dan Dafydd, owner of Sinclair General Stores, initially thought he had ordered only 80 eggs. However, he quickly realized that he had actually purchased 80 cases, totaling 720 eggs.

Mr. Dafydd decided to raffle off 100 of the eggs to support the RNLI. He remarked at the time, “RNLI, and people on the island love a competition, so it’s worked out for the best.”

Transportation Challenges in Orkney

Transportation issues, particularly with ferries, are a recurring challenge in Orkney. These disruptions often result in the suspension of public transport and can leave residents without access to essential goods.

The recent banana surplus serves as a reminder of how even small errors in ordering can lead to significant logistical challenges in remote areas. It also underscores the importance of community cooperation in addressing such situations.

By working together, local businesses and community groups can help ensure that resources are distributed efficiently, even in the face of unexpected circumstances. This incident in Kirkwall is a testament to the resilience and adaptability of the Orkney community.
