Pakistan Youngster Naseem Shah Faces PCB Scrutiny Over Controversial Tweet
Young Pakistani pace sensation Naseem Shah has found himself in hot water following a contentious social media post during the ongoing Pakistan Super League (PSL) 2026 season. The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) has taken a stern view of the matter and has initiated disciplinary proceedings against the talented fast bowler.
The controversy erupted when Naseem Shah’s official X account posted a reply to a tweet from the Pakistan Cricket Board’s official handle. The post in question read: “Why is she treated like the Queen at Lord’s?”. This remark was widely interpreted as a jab at Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz, who was in attendance at Lahore’s Gaddafi Stadium for the opening fixture of PSL 2026 between the Lahore Qalandars and the Hyderabad Kingsmen.
The Punjab Chief Minister was accorded a grand reception at the Gaddafi Stadium by the Punjab Cricket Association, and subsequently engaged in a meet-and-greet with players from both teams on the inaugural day of the 11th edition of the PSL. Her arrival at the venue was marked by a significant convoy of vehicles, and the considerable fanfare surrounding her presence appeared to irk the account associated with Naseem Shah.
The tweet quickly went viral across social media platforms, sparking widespread debate before it was eventually deleted. Naseem Shah later claimed that his account had been compromised and that he was not the author of the controversial post.
PCB Unconvinced by Hacking Claims, Issues Show-Cause Notice
Despite Naseem Shah’s assertion that his account was hacked, the Pakistan Cricket Board remains unconvinced. The board, now under the leadership of Pakistan’s Interior Minister and former Punjab Chief Minister Mohsin Naqvi, is treating the incident with utmost seriousness.
Reports indicate that the PCB has already served Naseem Shah with a show-cause notice, levelling accusations of violating specific clauses within his central contract and the PCB’s media policy. The PCB Code of Conduct explicitly prohibits players from engaging in public criticism, whether direct or indirect, of the Board, its officials, policies, or sponsors. The board believes that the tweet emanating from Naseem Shah’s account may have contravened these stringent guidelines.
Naseem Shah’s Recent Form and PSL Tenure
The 23-year-old Naseem Shah is currently representing the Rawalpindi Dinos in PSL 2026, one of the two new franchises introduced this season. The Dinos have already played their opening match, suffering a five-wicket defeat against the Peshawar Zalmi. Naseem Shah had a rather forgettable outing with the ball, conceding 51 runs from his four overs. His team, captained by Mohammad Rizwan, was unable to defend the imposing total of 214 runs they had set against the Zalmi.
Prior to his stint with the Rawalpindi Dinos, Naseem Shah had previously played for the Islamabad United and Quetta Gladiators in the PSL. He is widely regarded as a formidable talent and a potential future cornerstone of Pakistan’s fast bowling attack.
His recent international appearances have also been limited. In the lead-up to the PSL, Naseem had minimal game time during the T20 World Cup. The Pakistan team, led by Salman Ali Agha, experienced a disappointing campaign, failing to advance to the semi-finals after finishing third in their Super 8 group. Naseem featured in just one match against Sri Lanka in Pallekele, which ultimately proved to be Pakistan’s final game of the tournament. In that encounter, he managed to pick up one wicket for 36 runs from his four-over spell.
The future trajectory of Naseem Shah’s career within the PCB now hinges on the board’s decision following the conclusion of this disciplinary inquiry. The outcome will undoubtedly be closely watched by fans and stakeholders alike, given his significant potential and standing within Pakistan cricket.
