Former Scout Leader Faces Serious Abuse Allegations in South Australia
A man identified as Gavin McAloney, a former Scout leader from Bellevue Heights, south of Adelaide, has appeared in court facing a litany of deeply concerning sexual abuse charges involving five children. The allegations span a significant period, with some incidents reportedly occurring as far back as 23 years ago.
The 56-year-old faces a total of six charges. These include two counts of sexual abuse of a child, with the alleged incidents occurring separately between March 2, 2003, and June 5, 2003, and again between February 1, 2008, and February 2010. All of these alleged offences are said to have taken place at Bellevue Heights.

Furthermore, Mr. McAloney has been charged with four counts of indecent assault. These assaults are alleged to have occurred on January 1, 2018, January 1, 2020, and on two separate occasions on November 1, 2024. These particular offences are said to have taken place in both Bellevue Heights and Peterborough, a town located in South Australia’s mid-north region.
Court Proceedings and Ongoing Investigation
Mr. McAloney made his appearance before Magistrate Brian Nitschke on Friday, March 27. Following the court hearing, he was remanded into custody. His case is scheduled for a further appearance at the same court on Thursday, April 9, where proceedings will continue.

The accused is a former Scout leader, having been an active member of Scouts SA for over ten years. In the wake of these serious allegations, Scouts SA has confirmed their cooperation with the South Australia Police (SAPOL) investigation.
A spokesperson for Scouts SA stated, “Scouts SA was contacted by SAPOL regarding this individual and has been assisting with their investigation, providing all relevant information available.” The organisation emphasised that, based on the information currently at their disposal, there is no indication that the charges are connected to Mr. McAloney’s time with Scouts SA or his involvement in Scouting activities.
Scouts SA’s Response and Commitment to Child Safety
Upon becoming aware of the allegations, Scouts SA took immediate action. The individual was “immediately stood down and their membership cancelled,” according to the organisation’s statement.
Scouts SA reiterated its unwavering commitment to the safety and wellbeing of young people. The organisation has a stated “zero tolerance for any form of abuse or endangerment.” This incident underscores the paramount importance of robust safeguarding policies and swift action when concerns are raised.
