Carlton’s Football Boss Supports Michael Voss Amid Criticism
Carlton’s head of football has publicly backed coach Michael Voss following the team’s latest loss, which has led to increased pressure for his removal. The Blues suffered another heartbreaking defeat, this time against North Melbourne on Good Friday, after failing to hold a strong lead. This loss left the team with a 1-3 record at the start of the AFL season, prompting many fans to voice their frustration.
Sam Docherty, a former Carlton captain and respected figure within the club, has urged supporters to give Voss more time. He believes it would be unwise to make any drastic decisions so early in the season. “I just don’t think you can make a move on a coach at this time of the year,” Docherty said on 3AW radio. “It would be a really poor decision.”
Docherty highlighted the challenges the club has faced since the off-season, including changes to assistant coaches and the appointment of a new general manager of football. “We’re four games into a season and I think it would be a hasty call to do that. I think you’ve got to let it ride out and see what happens over the next little period.”
He also referenced the sacking of veteran coach Mick Malthouse in 2015, warning fans that quick fixes may not yield long-term results. “The sugar hit of a caretaker coach has a life-span, but by round 14 or 15 that year, it was absolutely hell,” he added. “The direction of the club, where you’re going, what you’re doing—was really tough.”
Support for Voss from Carlton’s Football Boss
Carlton’s head of football, Chris Davies, has also expressed his support for Voss, acknowledging the backlash from fans while emphasizing the need for unity. “My role is to support Michael as much as I possibly can,” Davies said on 3AW. “I totally accept that right now we’re not performing to the expectations of our supporter base.”
Davies admitted that the team’s performance has been disappointing, but he emphasized the importance of focusing on controllable factors. “What I want to do is bring whatever support I can bring to Michael to ensure we’re all in this together to pull ourselves out of a disappointing start to the year.”
He acknowledged that fans have every right to be upset, but stressed that progress on the field is essential. “The reality is that they should be seeing some progress on the field, and I accept that right now we haven’t been good enough to show enough of that this year.”

Challenges Ahead for the Blues
Carlton’s situation is further complicated by injuries, with vice-captain Jacob Weitering set to miss the upcoming Round 5 clash against Adelaide. Weitering entered the AFL’s concussion protocols after sustaining a head injury in the recent loss to North Melbourne.
This setback adds to the pressure on the team as they look to turn their season around. With key players sidelined and ongoing challenges on and off the field, the path to recovery will not be easy.
Fans are encouraged to remain patient as the club works through its difficulties. While the road ahead may be uncertain, the support of both the management and the playing group remains crucial in navigating this challenging period.
