Community Divided Over Controversial Mural Honouring Slain Refugee
A mural intended to honour the memory of Iryna Zarutska, a young Ukrainian refugee tragically murdered on a train in Charlotte, North Carolina, has become a focal point of controversy in Providence, Rhode Island. The unfinished artwork, painted on the side of a local gay bar, The Dark Lady, has drawn sharp criticism from the city’s mayor, who is calling for its removal.
Providence Mayor Brett Smiley stated that the community desires the mural’s removal, particularly after it was revealed that the project received funding from prominent, albeit controversial, figures Elon Musk and Andrew Tate.
“The murder of the individual depicted in this mural was a devastating tragedy,” Mayor Smiley commented. “However, the misguided, isolating intent of those funding murals like the one across the county is concerning. I continue to encourage our community to support local artists whose work brings us closer together rather than divide us.”

The mayor’s objection stems from the involvement of Musk and Tate, who pledged financial support to a fund dedicated to “honouring” Zarutska. This initiative reportedly began in September when Intercom CEO Eoghan McCabe announced on social media platform X his intention to offer grants for murals depicting Zarutska’s face in prominent US city locations. McCabe also provided a contact email for those wishing to contribute to the cause.

The mayor’s office has also highlighted that the mural was neither commissioned, funded, nor registered with the city, adding another layer of administrative concern.

Artist Ian Gaudreau, who is working on the mural, expressed his disappointment that the project had become politicised, stating it was contrary to his original intentions. “I think everybody was pretty moved by the way that she was just so publicly murdered,” Gaudreau remarked, recalling the harrowing circumstances of Zarutska’s death. “Just the fear in her eyes and the fact that nobody came to hold her hand while she took her last breaths was just pretty horrific.”
Gaudreau confirmed that the project is largely financed by Musk and a collective of online donors. He shared his hope on Instagram that the focus would remain on Zarutska’s humanity: “Iryna Zarutska was a human being with a mother and father, who are still with us and still grieving.”
The owners of The Dark Lady, Randy and Buck, issued a statement explaining that the mural was intended to commemorate Zarutska alongside a range of progressive causes. “This specific mural was created for our community to honour Iryna’s memory, mental wellness, LGBTQIA+ rights, immigration, the war, unity, and anti-Trump policies,” they stated.

However, they acknowledged that work on the mural has been temporarily halted to allow for the public presentation of final renderings, ensuring its “true meaning” is understood.

“We’re sorry for the chaos this has caused,” the owners added. “We are progressive Democrats, we do not support Donald Trump or politics of division, and our values are deeply rooted in inclusion, equality, and respect.”
The Tragedy of Iryna Zarutska
Iryna Zarutska, a 23-year-old refugee, was tragically stabbed to death on August 22 while riding a train in Charlotte, North Carolina. The attack occurred when an assailant approached her from behind. Zarutska, who had fled her war-torn homeland in Ukraine in 2022, reportedly bled to death as onlookers failed to intervene.
Authorities identified the alleged perpetrator as 34-year-old career criminal Decarlos Brown Jr., who reportedly claimed a schizophrenic episode as a defence for his violent actions.

In the weeks following Zarutska’s death, several well-known individuals, including those with a history of controversy, offered financial support for artistic tributes in her memory. Zarutska was reportedly on her way home from her job at Zepeddie’s pizzeria in south Charlotte when she was attacked, sustaining three stab wounds to her neck and hands. The incident occurred within five minutes of her boarding the train.

Zepeddie’s posted a heartfelt tribute to their employee, stating: “We lost not only an incredible employee, but a true friend. Our dear Iryna left this world far too soon, and our hearts are heavy with grief.”

The pizzeria added, “Since her passing, we have kept a candle burning in her memory – a small reminder of the warmth, kindness, and light she brought into our lives every single day.”
According to her obituary, Iryna Zarutska had graduated from Synergy College in Kyiv with a degree in Art and Restoration before emigrating to the United States. She was remembered as an adventurous individual with a passion for animals and travel. Her family noted her generous spirit, sharing that she frequently gifted her artwork to loved ones.
