Wu Yize experienced one of the most unforgettable moments of his young life when he lifted the World Snooker Championship trophy in front of a packed Crucible crowd. “My parents are the true champions,” Wu said emotionally after his victory. “Since I decided to drop out of school, my dad has been by my side. My mum has also been going through a lot over the years; they are the source of my strength, and I love them so much.”

At just 22 years old, Wu moved to Sheffield as a teenager with only his father, leaving behind his home in Lanzhou, China. The transition was challenging, as they spoke little English and faced numerous obstacles. His father gave up his job to support his son’s snooker career, and the two shared a “tiny windowless room, sleeping on the same bed” for the first two years in Yorkshire.
Homesickness and financial struggles were constant challenges. Wu initially earned limited prize money to cover basic expenses, but he persevered through the difficulties. He reflected on the early days of his journey, saying, “Especially the first year when I arrived in the UK to train and play, I wasn’t mentally in a good place. But I’m really happy I overcame many difficulties to come to where I am today.”
Despite the hardships, Wu never considered quitting snooker. He acknowledged the tough times, including living in poor conditions and dealing with acne caused by the air conditioning. However, he believed that these challenges built his strength and determination.
The Road to Success
Winning the world final elevated Wu to No 4 in the world rankings and secured a £500,000 cheque, which has now relieved him of his financial struggles. However, the journey to this point was not without its hurdles. Wu’s childhood coach, Roger Leighton, who trained him as an 11-year-old in Foshan, China, recognized his exceptional work ethic early on.
“When he came to me, his highest break was 49,” Leighton said earlier this month. “After a couple of weeks, he hit an 86. I said, ‘That’s great, amazing.’ He said, ‘It’s no good, because Ronnie [O’Sullivan] would have cleared up.’ That’s his mentality. But he was a fun-loving kid. If he missed a ball, he hated it, but he laughed a lot and that was his way of releasing pressure.”

At that time, my ranking was very low, so it was a crucial time for me to achieve some good results and keep my professional status. She means everything to me.”
