Iyer’s Hunger for IPL Glory Fuels Punjab Kings’ Ambitions
The drive to claim the coveted Indian Premier League (IPL) trophy has reached a new peak for Punjab Kings skipper Shreyas Iyer, with head coach Ricky Ponting expressing his conviction that Iyer is more determined than ever to guide the team to ultimate victory in the IPL 2026 season. Iyer, who took the reins as captain last year, orchestrated a stellar campaign that saw PBKS dominate the group stage and reach the final, ultimately falling to Royal Challengers Bengaluru in a hard-fought contest.
“The way he applied himself with the bat last season was arguably the finest we’ve witnessed from him in the IPL, and I can distinctly sense that his hunger for success is more potent than ever before,” Ponting revealed to reporters. “Having come so tantalisingly close to lifting the trophy as a captain with a new franchise last year, I’m entirely confident that he’s eager to take that crucial next step and lead us to championship glory this season,” the esteemed head coach added, speaking ahead of their opening fixture against the Gujarat Titans.
Building on Last Season’s Momentum
Ponting’s confidence in Iyer is deeply rooted in their shared history and understanding. The former Australian captain highlighted their successful tenure together at Delhi Capitals, where they cultivated a strong rapport built on remarkably similar cricketing philosophies.
“We’ve spent a considerable amount of time collaborating, around four to five years, back in Delhi,” Ponting explained. “When I assumed this directorial role and learned that Shreyas would be entering the mega auction, my immediate priority was to ensure we had sufficient financial resources to secure him for the team.”
“I was genuinely enthusiastic about the prospect of working with Shreyas once more, and fortunately, everything aligned seamlessly for us last year. We share incredibly similar ideas and philosophies regarding the game. It’s not uncommon for us to independently arrive at the same conclusion or thought process, and when we discuss it, it’s precisely what we were both contemplating,” he elaborated. This synchronicity in thought and approach is a significant asset for Punjab Kings as they aim for consistent performance.
Strategic Squad Enhancements for IPL 2026
Beyond the captain’s leadership, Ponting also shed light on the strategic additions to the Punjab Kings squad, particularly the inclusion of Australian talent Cooper Connolly. Ponting believes Connolly’s versatility will inject a new dimension of flexibility into the team, significantly bolstering their overall squad balance compared to the previous season.
“Adding someone of Cooper Connolly’s calibre to the squad provides us with invaluable flexibility in both the top and middle order, especially with his adept left-handed batting,” Ponting remarked.
“Last year, we relied on players like Priyansh Arya at the top of the order and Nehal Wadhera in the middle. The introduction of a player like Cooper Connolly offers us enhanced adaptability across the entire batting lineup. This is particularly beneficial when considering left-hand and right-hand batting combinations, should we opt for that strategic approach,” the former Australian captain elaborated.
However, Ponting was quick to temper expectations, stressing that past successes, no matter how impressive, will not guarantee future triumphs. He emphasised that the Punjab Kings’ strong performance in the previous season holds no inherent advantage going into the fresh campaign. Every match presents a new challenge, and the team must approach each encounter with renewed focus and determination. The emphasis is firmly on execution and consistency in IPL 2026.
