Magpies Skipper Darcy Moore Faces Extended Lay-off with Double Injury Blow
Collingwood’s premiership defence has been dealt a significant setback with captain Darcy Moore set to miss up to four weeks of action due to a combination of hamstring and knee injuries. The news comes as a bitter blow to the Magpies, particularly as Moore was only just returning from a pre-season calf complaint.
The star defender sustained the initial issue in his right hamstring during the first quarter of Collingwood’s recent victory against Greater Western Sydney last Friday night. Despite feeling the effects of the injury after kicking the ball, the 30-year-old bravely played out the remainder of the match, receiving on-field treatment.
However, post-game assessments and subsequent scans have revealed the full extent of the damage. Moore has been diagnosed with both a low-grade hamstring strain and an inflamed bursa located behind his knee. This dual diagnosis has placed him on the sidelines for a projected period of three to four weeks.
Collingwood’s senior coach, Craig McRae, had expressed concerns about Moore’s fitness immediately after the game, admitting the captain was “not right” and anticipating his absence for at least the upcoming clash. The medical prognosis has now confirmed these fears, ruling Moore out of several crucial fixtures.
Key Absences and Defensive Strain
Moore’s enforced break means he will miss at least the highly anticipated Thursday night encounter with the Brisbane Lions at the Gabba. Following this, he is also expected to be sidelined for games against Fremantle and Carlton. The Magpies will be anxiously awaiting his return, with a race against time potentially on for him to be fit for the Anzac Day clash against Essendon. Their fixture list continues with a game against Hawthorn on April 30th.
Collingwood’s football operations manager, Charlie Gardiner, acknowledged the disappointment surrounding Moore’s injury. “We are obviously disappointed for Darcy,” Gardiner stated. “Scans yesterday showed he has sustained a low-grade hamstring strain along with an inflamed bursa behind his knee, which is expected to keep him out for the next three to four weeks.”
Gardiner added that Moore would be working closely with the club’s medical and high-performance teams throughout his rehabilitation process. “Darcy will continue to work closely with our medical and high-performance team as he progresses through his return-to-play timeline.”
Reshuffling the Defence
Moore’s absence places significant pressure on Collingwood’s defensive stocks, which have already been tested this season. With Moore out, Billy Frampton is currently the only recognised key defender available down back. This situation will likely necessitate a reshuffling of the backline, with players like Jeremy Howe, Brayden Maynard, and Isaac Quaynor potentially needing to step into undersized key defensive roles once again.
The Magpies have, however, received some positive news regarding veteran midfielder Scott Pendlebury. The club is confident that Pendlebury, who has been dealing with achilles tightness, will only miss the upcoming Brisbane match. This provides a small silver lining amidst the concern over their captain’s extended absence.
