Adesanya Shrugs Off Retirement Talk After Latest UFC Stumble
Despite suffering a fourth consecutive defeat inside the octagon, UFC legend Israel Adesanya has firmly dismissed any notions of retirement. The Nigerian-New Zealander, a two-time middleweight champion, returned to action on Sunday (AEDT) after a year-long hiatus, facing off against American contender Joe Pyfer.
The initial rounds saw Adesanya showcase flashes of his trademark brilliance. He effectively utilised damaging leg kicks that clearly troubled Pyfer, hinting at a potential return to his dominant form. However, as the contest evolved into a more aggressive striking exchange, Adesanya found himself in a slugfest. He was visibly rocked on a couple of occasions, a vulnerability that Pyfer, known for his power and tenacity, expertly exploited. Pyfer then managed to take the fight to the canvas, where he rained down ground-and-pound strikes. The relentless assault left referee Herb Dean with no alternative but to stop the fight with less than a minute remaining in the second round.
Commentating on the bout, former UFC champion Daniel Cormier offered his analysis: “Adesanya decided to fight a brawl and you can’t brawl with Pyfer. He’s too good at it and he’s too powerful and he hurt Adesanya bad. He made a choice to stand in front of a dangerous man and Joe made him pay for it.”
Following the fight, Joe Pyfer showed respect to his opponent, acknowledging Adesanya as arguably the greatest middleweight fighter in history. Pyfer also stated his support for whatever Adesanya chooses to do next in his career.
When questioned about his future in his post-fight interview, the 36-year-old Adesanya was unequivocal. He expressed his commitment to continuing his career with the UFC, stating emphatically, “You keep going again and again and again and again. I’m not f—–g leaving, you will never stop me.”
Adesanya elaborated on his mindset heading into the bout: “I expected the best Joe Pyfer and I knew this was his biggest fight ever. There was nothing surprising, I expected the best and he brought the best. I said before coming into this fight, it’s been 13 months and I wanted to feel like I had been in a fight and he gave me just that.”

Israel Adesanya’s UFC journey has been a remarkable one. He first claimed the middleweight title in 2019 by defeating Robert Whittaker and successfully defended it for three years. His reign was famously ended by Alex Pereira in late 2022, but Adesanya managed to reclaim the belt in a thrilling rematch. However, since losing the title to Sean Strickland in 2023, he has been on a losing streak.
Despite these recent setbacks, Adesanya’s determination to continue competing at the highest level remains evident. His resilience and unwavering spirit suggest that he is far from finished in the world of mixed martial arts. Fans will be eagerly watching to see how “The Last Stylebender” navigates this challenging period of his career and whether he can recapture the championship form that made him a legend. His refusal to step away signals a deep passion for the sport and a desire to overcome adversity, characteristics that have defined his storied career. The upcoming fights will undoubtedly be crucial in shaping the narrative of his legacy, and Adesanya appears ready to face whatever challenges lie ahead.
