Raider’s Wild Act Sparks Mayhem, Sees Him Binned

Canberra Raiders’ fiery prop, Corey Horsburgh, found himself in the sin bin within the opening four minutes of their clash against the Cronulla-Sutherland Sharks at GIO Stadium, setting a contentious tone for the match.

The incident unfolded early in the game when the Sharks were awarded a penalty. Nicho Hynes opted for a quick tap, but Horsburgh, failing to retreat the required 10 metres, brought him down. This sparked a melee between players from both sides, with referee Grant Atkins swiftly sin-binning the Raiders’ prop.

Commentating on the match, Andrew Johns observed Horsburgh’s early intensity. “He looks a little bit emotional today, Big Red,” Johns remarked on Nine’s coverage. “Watch when he comes back out, 10 metres of red mist in the dressing room. He’s fired up the big boy.” Johns speculated that Horsburgh might have misjudged the 10-metre mark, perhaps believing he was standing at the required distance from the referee, who himself had not yet advanced the full 10 metres.

Horsburgh’s early departure proved costly for the Raiders. During his time off the field, the Sharks capitalised, establishing a 12-0 lead with tries from Teig Wilton and K.L. Iro.

Upon his return, Horsburgh’s presence seemed to ignite the Raiders. Kaeo Weekes crossed for their first points, concluding a dazzling linebreak from Xavier Savage. The game then settled into a try-for-try rhythm. Billy Burns added to the Sharks’ tally, countered by a try from Raiders forward Hudson Young. By halftime, the Sharks held a narrow 18-12 lead.

The second half commenced with the Raiders quickly closing the gap. Savelio Tamale scored the opening try after the break, though the conversion was unsuccessful. Samuel Stonestreet responded for the Sharks, but the Raiders fought back valiantly. In the 57th minute, Xavier Savage levelled the scores at 22-22 with an impressive individual effort.

However, the Sharks found another gear. They surged ahead with tries from Will Kennedy and Jesse Colquhoun. A late penalty goal from Nicho Hynes sealed the Sharks’ 34-22 victory, much to the disappointment of the home crowd.

The match highlighted several key aspects of the Raiders’ performance:

Key Moments and Performances

  • Corey Horsburgh’s Discipline: While a powerful presence, Horsburgh’s early sin bin significantly impacted the Raiders’ defensive structure and momentum. His on-field temperament will be a point of focus moving forward.
  • Sharks’ Clinical Finishing: Cronulla demonstrated their ability to capitalise on opportunities, particularly when the Raiders were down a player. Their try-scoring efforts were well-executed.
  • Raiders’ Resilience: Despite falling behind, Canberra showed commendable fighting spirit, clawing their way back into the contest and levelling the scores in the second half.
  • Xavier Savage’s Impact: Savage was a standout for the Raiders, his linebreak leading to their first try and his own try in the second half bringing them level. His attacking prowess was a constant threat.

The Raiders will need to address their disciplinary issues and defensive lapses if they are to challenge the competition’s top teams. For the Sharks, this win underscores their strong season and their capacity to perform under pressure.
