One Nation Claims Liberal Heartland: MacKillop Seat Falls in South Australia
In a significant political shift in South Australia, the Australian Broadcasting Corporation (ABC) has projected that One Nation has secured the seat of MacKillop, marking a notable victory in what was historically a safe Liberal Party stronghold. This win represents One Nation’s third seat in the state’s lower house, underscoring a changing electoral landscape.
The newly elected Member for MacKillop, Jason Virgo, brings a unique background to state parliament. A current councillor for the City of Mount Gambier, Virgo’s professional experience spans the security industry and a period working within the immigration detention system on Christmas Island. His victory came after a closely contested race, culminating in the concession of defeat by Liberal candidate Rebekah Rosser.
In a social media post, Ms. Rosser acknowledged the tight nature of the election, expressing gratitude to all who participated. “This was a close result and I want to sincerely thank everyone who voted whether you supported me or not,” she stated. “Our level of engagement reflects a community that cares deeply about its future.”
Later, speaking with ABC South East SA, Ms. Rosser candidly reflected on the outcome, remarking that Mr. Virgo was “the candidate the voters have chosen.” She did not shy away from critiquing her own party’s recent performance. “I think we can all agree unanimously that the Liberal Party hasn’t covered itself in glory in the past four years,” she commented. Despite her concession, Ms. Rosser expressed confidence in the Liberal Party’s future leadership, specifically mentioning Ashton Hurn. “I am very confident in the leadership of Ashton Hurn and I was very much wanting MacKillop to be a part of the next echelon of the Liberal Party,” she added. “I thought we have a lot to contribute, we have brilliant ideas, we have entrepreneurial skill.”
The seat of MacKillop was previously held by Nick McBride, who transitioned from the Liberal Party to an independent status. At the time of this projection, McBride was sitting in fourth place based on first preferences, trailing behind Labor’s Mark Braes, who held third position. It is important to note that Mr. McBride is currently facing charges related to alleged assault against his wife, a matter he has consistently maintained his innocence on.
Narungga Remains Contested: A Potential Fourth for One Nation
Adding to the electoral drama, one seat remains undecided: Narungga, located on the Yorke Peninsula. One Nation is currently in the lead in this electorate, potentially paving the way for a fourth seat for the party in South Australia’s parliament. The final outcome in Narungga is eagerly awaited, as it could further solidify One Nation’s emerging influence in the state.
The shift in the MacKillop seat signifies a broader trend of voters seeking alternatives and challenging traditional party loyalties. The success of One Nation in a historically Liberal electorate suggests a growing appetite for their platform and messaging among a segment of the South Australian population. The implications of these results will undoubtedly be a focal point for political analysis and strategy in the coming months, as parties assess the evolving preferences of the electorate.
Jason Virgo has been approached for comment regarding his victory and his plans for representing the MacKillop electorate. The outcome in Narungga is expected to be finalised as remaining votes are counted and preferences are distributed. This election cycle has proven to be a period of significant change and voter realignment in South Australia.
