Iran War: Pentagon’s Silent Shift

The prospect of American boots on Iranian soil is no longer a distant hypothetical, with former White House advisor Steve Bannon issuing a stark warning: U.S. troops could be deployed in Iran as the White House grapples with the escalating conflict with Tehran, now in its fifth week. This potential escalation follows the recent arrival of thousands of Marines in the Middle East, with additional elite U.S. Army paratroopers and specialised amphibious landing ships also en route. These deployments are widely interpreted as preparations for targeted operations within Iran, potentially focusing on key islands in the Strait of Hormuz and the Persian Gulf, rather than a full-scale invasion.

While President Donald Trump has publicly stated he is “not putting troops anywhere,” he has also cryptically advised reporters that he would not disclose any future ground operations should he authorise boots on the ground in Iran. This ambiguity has created a significant rift within the MAGA movement, as the notion of further American lives lost in a foreign entanglement echoes the painful memories of the Iraq War and the protracted conflict in Afghanistan.

The Human Cost of Escalation

Any ground operation within Iran would almost certainly lead to a dramatic increase in troop casualties. This comes at a time when 13 U.S. service personnel have already lost their lives and at least 300 have been wounded in the past month alone.

At the Conservative Political Action Conference in Grapevine, Texas, Steve Bannon painted a vivid, and concerning, picture for attendees. He warned, “Your sons, daughters, granddaughters, grandsons could be on Kharg Island or be holding a beachhead down by the Strait of Hormuz.”

Strategic Objectives and Potential Targets

President Trump has simultaneously threatened attacks on Iranian territory while maintaining that the U.S. is engaged in negotiations. He has notably told reporters that the U.S. “can take out” Kharg Island “at any time.” This island, situated just 15 miles off the Iranian mainland, is a linchpin of Iran’s economy, responsible for a staggering 90 percent of the nation’s oil exports. U.S. forces have already targeted naval mine sites on the island earlier this month.

Military analysts suggest that U.S. troops could also move to seize Qeshm Island, located south of Kharg. This island is believed to harbour a substantial underground network storing anti-ship missiles, mines, and drones.

The strategic rationale behind seizing Iranian territory in the Strait of Hormuz or the Persian Gulf is to compel Tehran to cease its blockade of this vital waterway. This strait is a critical global shipping route, through which approximately 20 percent of the world’s oil and gas ordinarily passes. Since U.S.-Israeli strikes against Iran commenced on February 28, Iran has actively disrupted tanker and cargo ship transit, triggering a surge in global oil and gas prices and unsettling financial markets.

Pentagon’s Preparedness and White House’s Stance

The Pentagon is reportedly making preparations for operations that could extend for weeks within Iran. According to anonymous U.S. officials, U.S. Special Forces would likely spearhead raids, working in conjunction with infantry troops, rather than engaging in a full-scale invasion.

White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt stated that the Pentagon’s role is “to make preparations in order to give the commander in chief maximum optionality.” However, she was careful to emphasise that “it does not mean the president has made a decision.”

The U.S. Marines aboard the USS Tripoli arrived in the Middle East on Friday, with thousands more Marines currently en route from the U.S. West Coast. Reinforcements from the U.S. Army’s 82nd Airborne Division are also being deployed to the region, underscoring the seriousness of the evolving situation.
