Neale Whitaker’s New Chapter: From The Block to My Reno Rules
Neale Whitaker, a well-known name in the world of interior design, has taken a bold step by moving from The Block to Channel Seven’s new show, My Reno Rules. This decision came as a surprise to many fans when he announced his departure from The Block in August.
In an interview with Yahoo Lifestyle, Whitaker shared that his move was influenced by personal circumstances. He mentioned that his partner faced significant health challenges, which required him to make substantial changes in his life. At that time, he found it challenging to keep up with the demands of traveling frequently for The Block.
When the opportunity to join My Reno Rules arose, Whitaker thought about it for just five minutes before accepting. “It was the perfect time for me to take on something new,” he said. “I’m excited about this challenge and ready to embrace it.”
A New Challenge in Renovation TV
Whitaker expressed his enthusiasm for My Reno Rules, highlighting its potential to redefine renovation television. “I’m thrilled to be part of a show that will truly change the way we look at renovations,” he stated. “This is an excellent opportunity to share my experience with a new generation of renovators in one of my favorite cities.”
The show will feature four teams of contestants who will completely renovate two existing properties. These homes will then be given away to lucky viewers. Unlike The Block, where houses are auctioned off, My Reno Rules will have a unique twist with Adrian Portelli, known as the ‘serial Block bidder,’ hosting the live prize draw.
Property Titles and Behind-the-Scenes Drama
According to property titles, Adrian Portelli purchased two suburban homes in Melbourne’s Bulleen, 15km from the CBD, for My Reno Rules. These homes, valued at $2.7 million, were acquired through Portelli’s company Xclusive Tech Pty Ltd and were effectively donated to the show.
Portelli’s role in the project is primarily that of a sponsor. However, there have been some challenges on the production site in Bulleen. An insider revealed that the original builder walked away after a disagreement over payment. Another source confirmed that the filming had yet to start due to these issues.
Despite the delays, a spokesperson for Channel Seven confirmed that construction on My Reno Rules will begin later in the year. “As part of the pre-production phase, there are continuing conversations with several builders,” they said. “Construction will commence later this year, with the series premiering on Seven and 7plus in 2026.”
A Surprising Cameo on The Block
Before his move to My Reno Rules, Whitaker made a final appearance on The Block during the 2025 season. His cameo received a warm reception from the teams, who were eager to hear his insights on their spa rooms.
However, teammates Han and Can might have wished he hadn’t made that appearance after his candid assessment of their spa room. Whitaker described the effort as “jarring” and compared the result to a “crime scene.” The issue was exacerbated by a bath filled with yellow-colored water, a feature common to all teams’ bathrooms.
“Spa bathrooms need to be a quiet experience. This is the complete opposite: everything in here is jarring,” he remarked. “This is a crime scene. There’s too much going on here… you cannot relax in here. It’s too much… It’s a mess, and it’s everything a spa experience shouldn’t be.”
