Obama’s Playful Exchange at New Jersey Rally
During a campaign event in New Jersey, former U.S. President Barack Obama sparked some surprise when he told a woman she “looked cute” while addressing a crowd. The moment took place as Obama supported Democratic gubernatorial candidate Mikie Sherrill.
The former president was seen engaging in a lighthearted conversation with a supporter who was heckling the event. In a clip shared by a news outlet, Obama joked with the woman, saying, “I heard you girl, just settle down.” He then addressed the crowd, stating, “I’m here to talk to everybody not just you.”
As the audience laughed, Obama added, “I mean, you look cute,” before quickly clarifying, “But I am married.” He concluded with a nod to his wife, Michelle, saying, “Michelle’s fine too.”
This exchange has drawn attention amid ongoing speculation about the Obamas’ marriage. Rumors of a potential divorce have been circulating for several months, especially after Michelle Obama missed significant events like Jimmy Carter’s funeral and Donald Trump’s inauguration.

However, Michelle has previously explained her decision to skip those events, stating that she is now able to set her own schedule since she is no longer the First Lady. She mentioned in an interview that she is finally able to make choices based on what is best for her, rather than what others expect.
In April, Michelle discussed this topic on her podcast, Working It Out, where she said, “This year was a real big example of me, myself, looking at something that I was supposed to do—without naming names—and I chose to do what was best for me, not what I had to do, not what I thought other people wanted me to do.”
Addressing Divorce Rumors
In July, the couple addressed the rumors of their separation when Barack appeared on his wife’s podcast, IMO, which she co-hosts with her brother Craig Robinson. During the discussion, Michelle humorously remarked, “It’s nice to be in the same room as my husband. When we aren’t, folks think we’re divorced.”
She also shared a heartfelt reflection on their 33-year marriage, stating, “There hasn’t been one moment in our marriage where I thought about quitting my man.” Michelle acknowledged the challenges they’ve faced over the years but emphasized that she wouldn’t trade their relationship.
“I have become a better person because of the man I’m married to,” she said. “Marriage is hard for us both, but I wouldn’t trade it. He’s as the young people say… my person.”

Michelle also highlighted the importance of working through difficulties in a relationship. She expressed concern that many young people give up on marriage too soon due to unrealistic expectations.
“I talk about these things because I think that people give up too quickly on marriage,” she said. “Because there is so much friction built into the equation. And if you’re not getting help, talking about it, going to therapy, just understanding how things are changing, and how do you continuously renegotiate your relationship with your partner, I just see people quitting.”
She added, “Because they look at me and Barack and go, ‘#couple goals.’ And I’m like, it’s hard.”
Reflections on Life After the Presidency
In April, Obama admitted that he was in a “deep deficit” with his wife after his two presidential terms. He described his efforts to recover from that situation by doing “occasionally fun things.”
Michelle has also reflected on her experience as an empty nester, noting that life without the pressures of the presidency has been liberating. In an interview with Julia Louis-Dreyfus, she said, “At this stage in life for me, personally, is the first time I’ve been completely free.”
She described the freedom of making choices solely based on her own preferences, adding, “This is when we start living ladies.”
