Thierry Henry Criticizes Vinicius Junior’s Performance in Real Madrid’s Defeat to Liverpool
Thierry Henry, a former Arsenal, Barcelona, and France forward, has voiced his concerns over Vinicius Junior’s performance during Real Madrid’s 1-0 loss to Liverpool in the Champions League. The match took place on Tuesday night at Anfield, where Alexis Mac Allister’s goal in the 61st minute secured a victory for Arne Slot’s team. This marked Madrid’s first defeat in the competition this season.
Real Madrid struggled to create scoring opportunities against Liverpool, with both Vinicius Jr and Kylian Mbappe failing to register a shot on target. Henry specifically criticized Vinicius Jr for not taking advantage of the chances he had, particularly against Conor Bradley.
“I do not understand it. You have to play with what’s in front of you, you have to play the moment,” Henry said in an interview with CBS Sports. “And even if there’s nobody in the box, as you said, at least the opposing team has dropped 30 yards back and then you can give the ball to your midfielder, who might have a strike from outside the box.”
Henry also expressed frustration with Vinicius Jr’s decision-making during the game. He mentioned that sometimes players try to be too clever when it’s not necessary. “Sometimes it’s too scripted. You have an opportunity at the beginning, for example, Vinicius Jr had Conor Bradley for the first five to seven minutes, and then he let him breathe. Why do you let him breathe?”
Key Moments in the Match
During the early stages of the game, Vinicius Jr found himself in a one-on-one situation with Conor Bradley. Instead of taking a direct shot, he passed the ball back to his left-back, which resulted in a one-vs-three scenario. “Then he attacked alone against the three of them, and I thought, wait, do the math. You had a one-on-one, try to see what you can do with that,” Henry explained.
He questioned why Vinicius Jr moved the ball back, leading to a more difficult situation. “Why do you move the ball back so it comes back to you and you can play a one-vs-three? I just don’t get it at times.”
Gareth Bale Agrees with Henry’s Verdict
Former Real Madrid forward Gareth Bale also shared similar sentiments. He agreed with Henry’s assessment, stating that the lack of creativity in the final third was disappointing. “I think it was that spark that Thierry and I were talking about, that we didn’t see Mbappe and Vinicius in the final third work a bit of magic and bring Madrid back into the game.”
Bale added that sometimes the team complicates things unnecessarily. “Sometimes they just need to try and test the defender. They’re clearly faster than anyone else on the pitch. But I think maybe they don’t do it because there’s no one else in the box waiting for the crosses. Maybe they need that focal number nine.”

Looking Ahead for Real Madrid
Despite the loss, Real Madrid will need to regroup and focus on their upcoming matches. The team will look to improve their attacking strategies and ensure that key players like Vinicius Jr and Mbappe are more effective in crucial moments.
