Martin’s US GP Sprint Victory Ends Drought

Martin Masters Austin Sprint in Thrilling Final Lap Pass

The Circuit of the Americas (COTA) delivered a heart-stopping MotoGP sprint race on Saturday, with Jorge Martin snatching a dramatic victory from Francesco Bagnaia on the very last lap. The win marks Martin’s first MotoGP triumph since his championship-winning season in 2024, a performance that defied pre-race doubts about his fitness on the physically demanding Texan track.

The 10-lap sprint was a rollercoaster of action, drama, and unfortunate incidents, leaving a trail of fallen riders and reshuffled standings. Polesitter Fabio Di Giannantonio got off to a solid start, but his race was quickly derailed in the opening corners. A slight miscalculation at the wide first turn saw him shuffled back by a charging pack including Bagnaia, Pedro Acosta, and Marc Marquez. While Di Giannantonio managed to claw his way back to third with a decisive move on Marquez, his resurgence was short-lived.

A Collision That Derailed Championship Aspirations

The defining incident of the early laps occurred when Marc Marquez attempted a bold overtake on Di Giannantonio at the end of the back straight. Marquez ran deep into Turn 12, aiming for an inside line, but went wide himself. This manoeuvre unfortunately collected Di Giannantonio, sending both riders crashing to the tarmac and effectively ending their chances of scoring points in the sprint. This collision was a significant blow for both riders, particularly Marquez, who was looking to make a strong statement at COTA.

Martin’s Tyre Strategy Pays Off

Remarkably, Jorge Martin was languishing in sixth position as the field navigated the chaos of the opening lap. However, his strategic decision to opt for a medium compound rear tyre – a choice that went against the grain of the rest of the grid who opted for the softer compound – proved to be a masterstroke. As the race progressed, Martin began to systematically pick off his rivals, his pace proving superior in the latter stages.

He steadily closed the gap to race leader Francesco Bagnaia, who had appeared to have the sprint comfortably in hand for much of the race. In the final two laps, Martin began to make significant inroads, chipping away at Bagnaia’s lead. The decisive moment came on the final lap, where Martin executed a daring, yet fair, manoeuvre at Turn 12, muscling past Bagnaia to claim a sensational victory.

Post-Race Shenanigans and Bezzecchi’s Frustration

Adding a touch of the bizarre to Martin’s triumph, he later crashed while performing a celebratory wheelie on his in-lap. Thankfully, the incident was minor, and he was able to continue his celebrations, much to the relief of his team and fans.

Francesco Bagnaia crossed the line a commendable second, with rising star Pedro Acosta rounding out the podium in third.

Meanwhile, Marco Bezzecchi, who had been in contention for second place with Martin, suffered a disappointing crash at Turn 11 on lap eight. This marked the second time this season that Bezzecchi has fallen from a strong sprint race position, following a similar incident from the lead in Thailand, highlighting a frustrating trend for the Italian rider.

Mir’s Promising Run Ends in the Gravel

Another rider who showed strong form before an untimely exit was Joan Mir. The factory Honda rider was running a solid fourth, actively pressuring Acosta for third, when he lost control at the first corner on the final lap, crashing out of contention.

Enea Bastianini, aboard the Tech3 KTM, capitalised on Mir’s misfortune, riding an excellent attacking race to secure fourth place. He managed to pass Alex Marquez on the final lap to snatch the position, a notable achievement for the Italian.
