Magpies Captain Darcy Moore Sidelined for Weeks After Hamstring Setback
Collingwood’s premiership defence has suffered a significant blow with captain Darcy Moore ruled out for an estimated three to four weeks due to a low-grade hamstring strain. The key defender sustained the injury during Friday night’s clash, with further scans revealing inflammation of a bursa behind his knee.
This latest setback is particularly frustrating for the Magpies, as Moore was only just returning to the field after an earlier pre-season calf injury. He managed to play out the entire game despite the hamstring strain, which occurred in the first quarter, indicating he was playing through considerable discomfort.
“Darcy will continue to work closely with our medical and high performance team as he progresses through his return-to-play timeline,” stated EGM Football Charlie Gardiner. The club is hopeful for a smooth recovery, but the timeline suggests he will miss a crucial period of the early season.
Coach Craig McRae alluded to the difficult decision-making process surrounding Moore’s participation in the game. “For those following his rehab back to play, he had this about 10-12 days ago,” McRae explained in his post-game press conference. “We’re in a game so we go ‘can he push through, can he take some minutes?’ because it’s important in terms of rotations if he can take some minutes without risk. Now I say that (but) I’m just backing the high performance team, that’s not my area…but he’s not right, he’s not 100 per cent.”
This injury continues a worrying pattern of soft-tissue issues for the 30-year-old defender, raising concerns about his durability this season.
Potential Replacements Emerge
With Moore sidelined, the Magpies will need to look within their squad to fill the void in defence.
Wil Parker is the most likely candidate to step into the senior side. Parker featured in the opening two rounds of the season before making way for Moore and Jeremy Howe’s return. He served as the carryover emergency for Round 3, indicating he’s on the cusp of selection. His inclusion would provide a direct replacement in the backline.
Joel Cochran is also a possibility to make his AFL debut. Cochran has reportedly put in a strong pre-season, gaining significant strength, and could be a bolter for a spot in the team. His development over the summer may have put him in good stead to earn a senior opportunity.
Meanwhile, Reef McInnes is still working his way back to full fitness. He played his first game back from an ACL rupture in Friday’s VFL match, but his minutes were significantly managed. McInnes will need to continue building his load and match fitness before he can be considered for senior selection at AFL level.
The Magpies face a tough challenge next, taking on Brisbane on Easter Thursday. The absence of their inspirational captain will undoubtedly test the team’s depth and resilience as they aim to maintain their strong start to the season. The coming weeks will be a true test of the Magpies’ ability to adapt and perform without their key leader. The club will be hoping for a swift recovery for Moore, but in the interim, other players will need to seize the opportunity to impress.
