England Squad Shake-Up Ahead of Japan Friendly: Key Absences and New Arrivals
The England camp is undergoing a significant reshuffling as the Three Lions prepare for their upcoming friendly against Japan. A total of eight players will be departing the squad, including prominent figures like Arsenal’s Declan Rice and Bukayo Saka, who are returning to their club for medical assessment. This strategic move comes as part of manager Thomas Tuchel’s plan to manage his squad effectively in the lead-up to major tournaments.
Rice and Saka, who only joined the England setup on Friday as part of a larger group of 11 players rested for the recent 1-1 draw with Uruguay, will now head back to Premier League leaders Arsenal. Their departure is for “medical assessment,” underscoring the club’s priority in ensuring the fitness of their key players.
The injury concerns extend beyond the Arsenal duo. Crystal Palace’s Adam Wharton and Noni Madueke, also from Arsenal, will be returning to their respective clubs after sustaining injuries during Friday’s encounter at Wembley. Manchester City’s John Stones is another notable absentee, leaving the camp due to a calf injury.
Further departures from the squad include Fikayo Tomori and Dominic Calvert-Lewin, who both featured in the draw against Uruguay. Goalkeeper Aaron Ramsdale will also be leaving, trimming Tuchel’s squad down to 27 players for the upcoming match against Japan, which will be held at Wembley.
New Faces and Returning Stars Boost England’s Options
While several players are heading out, the England camp is also set to welcome new arrivals. Captain Harry Kane, along with Morgan Rogers, Anthony Gordon, Elliott Anderson, Nico O’Reilly, Marc Guehi, Ezri Konsa, Dan Burn, and Dean Henderson, are all set to join the squad. These players were part of the group that arrived into camp on Friday, adding fresh legs and experienced talent to Tuchel’s options.
Tuchel had previously outlined his intention to implement a novel approach for these pre-tournament friendlies, aiming to “split” his squad. This strategy allows him to provide much-needed rest to his core group of players while simultaneously assessing a broader pool of talent in preparation for upcoming challenges.
Injury Concerns Cast a Shadow Over Recent Performance
The recent 1-1 draw with Uruguay was not without its setbacks. Arsenal winger Noni Madueke was forced off in the first half after a heavy collision. While Manchester City’s Phil Foden was involved in a forceful tackle from Uruguay defender Ronald Araujo, he is reported to be fine.

Madueke’s injury has raised concerns. The 24-year-old forward was seen leaving Wembley with his left knee in a brace following a challenge in the 37th minute. Although details regarding the extent of his injury are yet to be fully disclosed, manager Tuchel expressed his worry. “I’m worried, of course, because I think he was a difference-maker,” Tuchel stated. “He started well, he was full of energy, he was ready to go. Very sad and upset and hopefully it’s not a big injury.”
John Stones’ departure was also a blow, as he was close to starting the Uruguay match before feeling an issue with his calf. “He’s obviously very upset and at the moment he gets my full support because it helps him more than putting more pressure,” Tuchel commented on the Manchester City defender’s situation.
Squad Overview for the Japan Fixture
Despite the departures and injuries, the England squad for the match against Japan remains robust. Notable players who will be staying with the 27-man squad include Harry Maguire and Ben White. Tuchel had previously indicated that Maguire was fifth in his pecking order of centre-backs. Ben White, an Arsenal full-back, faced some audible disapproval from the Wembley crowd. The 28-year-old was making his first appearance for England since his departure from the 2022 World Cup squad for personal reasons. He managed to score England’s goal in the match before conceding the penalty that led to Uruguay’s equaliser.
