Dolphins’ Scoring Ace Lands at Storm 2027

Dolphins Star Jamayne Isaako Set for Melbourne Move: A Strategic Switch for the Storm

The National Rugby League (NRL) landscape is in constant flux, and the latest significant player movement sees Dolphins winger Jamayne Isaako agreeing to a two-year deal with the Melbourne Storm, commencing next season. This strategic acquisition by the Storm arrives at a particularly opportune moment, addressing a looming gap in their roster.

The Victorian-based club is slated to lose their reliable goal-kicking winger, Nick Meaney, who is heading to Perth in 2027. Isaako, with his proven track record in both scoring tries and converting goals, is being heralded as the ideal like-for-like replacement. This move is not just a professional decision for Isaako but also a personal one, as his partner, Abby, hails from Melbourne.

Jim Banaghan, Isaako’s manager, expressed optimism about the transfer, labelling it a “win-win for the club, Jamayne and his family.” While acknowledging Isaako’s deep affection for the Dolphins and the sadness associated with his departure, Banaghan highlighted the realities of modern rugby league and the salary cap. “He loves the Dolphins and is sad to be leaving but that is the reality of the salary cap these days. Hopefully one day he can return,” Banaghan told AAP.

The departure of Isaako undoubtedly presents challenges for the Dolphins. The club is currently engaged in negotiations to re-sign several key players whose contracts are nearing expiration. Among those reportedly in discussions are winger Selwyn Cobbo and centre Jake Averillo. The Dolphins also have a strong contingent of wingers already secured, including Jack Bostock and Tevita Naufahu, both contracted until the end of 2027. Additionally, LJ Nonu, a versatile centre and winger who has yet to make his NRL debut, is also signed for the next two years.

Isaako’s Unwavering Reliability and Scoring Prowess

Jamayne Isaako has been a revelation for the Dolphins since their inception. His remarkable consistency is underscored by an incredible streak of 76 consecutive matches played. Furthermore, he has played every single minute of every game during this period, a testament to his exceptional reliability and meticulous preparation off the field. This unwavering commitment has made him a cornerstone of the Dolphins’ squad.

Beyond his durability, Isaako’s scoring prowess is undeniable. He has twice been the NRL’s leading point scorer, achieving this feat in both the 2023 and 2025 seasons. His scoring talent was first recognised in 2018, his rookie year with the Brisbane Broncos, where he also claimed the top scorer award.

Across his 164 NRL appearances for the Broncos, Gold Coast Titans, and Dolphins, the 29-year-old has amassed an impressive tally of 77 tries and 525 goals, accumulating a career total of 1363 points. His accurate goal-kicking is expected to be a significant asset for the Storm.

Addressing Melbourne’s Goal-Kicking Needs

The Storm’s need for a reliable goal-kicker was starkly evident in their recent 28-24 loss to the North Queensland Cowboys. With Nick Meaney absent due to a back injury, captain Harry Grant, who is not a recognised kicker, struggled to convert. Grant managed only two successful conversions from five attempts and missed other opportunities that proved costly. Isaako’s arrival is anticipated to immediately rectify this deficiency, providing Melbourne with a consistent and proven sharpshooter from the tee.

Melbourne’s director of football, Frank Ponissi, expressed his enthusiasm for the signing. “Jamayne is a high-quality and experienced player who adds speed and versatility to our backline,” Ponissi stated. He further elaborated on the mutual benefits of the move: “With Jamayne’s partner Abby having her parents based in Melbourne, this move suits both parties incredibly well, and we’re confident he’ll be an excellent addition to our club and make a strong contribution to our squad over the next few years.” The Storm are clearly banking on Isaako’s experience and skill set to bolster their squad for the upcoming seasons.
