Broncos rookie sparks extension talks after standout debut

Brisbane Broncos Explore Future with Tom Duffy

The Brisbane Broncos have started discussions with young halfback Tom Duffy to ensure he remains with the club beyond this season. This move comes after Duffy made his debut for the Broncos on Friday night, stepping in as a replacement for skipper Adam Reynolds, who was sidelined due to a groin injury.

Duffy faced an immense challenge, stepping into the spotlight against the Cowboys, the team that had previously released him after just a few games. Despite the pressure, he delivered a strong performance, showing his potential and determination.

According to reports from the Courier Mail, the Broncos are keen to keep Duffy at the club long-term. They see him as a key player in the race for the vacant halfback position alongside Jonah Pezet next year. With Reynolds set to retire at the end of the season, Duffy has a unique opportunity to prove himself as a primary playmaker.

Pezet, who recently had a brief stint with the Parramatta Eels, is expected to join the Broncos soon. The club believes one of the two young halfbacks will be the ideal partner for Ezra Mam in the halves. Duffy’s debut performance was impressive, with two try assists and three-line break assists against a strong Cowboys team.

In addition to his attacking contributions, Duffy also kicked a crucial field goal in the final moments of the game, putting his team ahead. Although North Queensland managed to score a try to secure the win, Duffy can take pride in his performance.

Duffy’s manager, Sam Ayoub, confirmed to the Courier Mail that negotiations have already begun regarding an extended contract for the young player. “We are in discussions now about an upgraded and extended contract for him,” Ayoub said. “Tom deserves it. We’re working through it.”

Ayoub praised Duffy’s character and work ethic, highlighting his qualities as an NRL-standard playmaker. “Tommy is a great kid. He doesn’t whinge or complain, and he works hard. He has a level of class about him, and that’s what the Broncos have seen in him.”

Duffy expressed his desire to stay with the Broncos, stating that he is happy and settled in Brisbane. “He would love to stay. I’m sure an opportunity will come his way next year with Adam Reynolds retiring.”

Ayoub added that while there is no rush, the Broncos’ interest in Duffy is clear. “The Broncos like Tom and Tom is happy there, so I’d like to think we will get a deal done.”
