As he prepares for the COP30 global climate summit in Brazil, his commitment to protecting the planet remains unwavering. In a recent video posted on his Instagram page, alongside the Austin-based environmental nonprofit Re:wild, DiCaprio addressed the importance of environmental caution ahead of the Conference of the Parties. The clip highlights the significance of the upcoming summit, which will be held in the heart of the Amazon rainforest. This location is particularly meaningful, as Brazil is home to 60% of the Amazon, often referred to as the “lungs of the earth.”
The State of the Amazon Rainforest
DiCaprio emphasized that the Amazon, along with other vital ecosystems, is under threat. He pointed out that over the past four decades, 95% of Amazon deforestation has been driven by animal agriculture. This involves cutting and burning ancient forests to create pasture and feed for livestock. The actor warned that this industry-fueled destruction contributes to droughts and illegal fires, creating a dangerous cycle that affects the entire planet.
He also highlighted the loss of natural habitats, stating that in his lifetime alone, humans have lost over 400 million acres of forest and 70% of wildlife populations. These figures underscore the urgency of the environmental crisis and the need for immediate action.
Lessons from Indigenous Communities
DiCaprio stressed the importance of learning from Indigenous peoples and local communities who have lived in balance with nature for generations. He noted that these groups are the most effective guardians of the environment. Their practices demonstrate a shift from an extractive relationship with nature to a protective and restorative one.
Since 2021, the Forest Tenure Funders Group has mobilized $1.7 billion to support these communities. Re:wild, which DiCaprio is involved with, has contributed $500 million of these funds and plans to renew its pledge for another $500 million over the next five years.

As world leaders gather in Brazil, DiCaprio urged them to take advantage of this unprecedented opportunity to support nature’s most effective guardians. He suggested that policies and funding from the United for Wildlife Global Summit to the United Nations Climate Convention could make a significant difference. Additionally, he mentioned Brazil’s initial investment of the first billion dollars to the Tropical Forest’s Forever facility as a positive step forward.
DiCaprio emphasized that it is essential to learn from Indigenous partners, who show that nature is the most powerful solution to the climate, biodiversity, and human wellbeing crises. He concluded by calling on world leaders to unite and meet this moment with courage, ambition, and bold action, stressing that our future depends on it.
