Abigail Spanberger’s Historic Victory in Virginia Gubernatorial Race

Abigail Spanberger has made history by winning the Virginia gubernatorial race, marking a significant victory for the Democratic Party. Her win is seen as a strong statement against the influence of Donald Trump and his policies.

Spanberger, a former congresswoman and ex-CIA officer, defeated Republican Winsome Earle-Sears, who was the incumbent lieutenant governor of Virginia. This result makes Spanberger the first woman to hold the position of governor in Virginia’s history, succeeding Glenn Youngkin, who won the election in 2021 based on dissatisfaction with the Biden administration.

This win is a major boost for Democrats in a state that has become increasingly competitive over the years. Virginia’s off-year gubernatorial elections are often viewed as indicators of national political sentiment. Spanberger’s comfortable margin over Earle-Sears suggests that the Democratic Party may be in a stronger position heading into next year’s midterm elections, which will play a crucial role in shaping the final years of Trump’s presidency.

The campaign for the Virginia governor’s race saw a significant contrast in support between the two candidates. While neither President Joe Biden nor Vice President JD Vance visited Virginia to campaign or hold fundraisers for Earle-Sears, top Democrats actively supported Spanberger. Former President Barack Obama campaigned with her in Norfolk, Virginia, while former Presidents Bill Clinton and First Lady Hillary Clinton participated in a fundraiser for Spanberger last month.

The fundraiser, hosted by former Virginia Governor Terry McAuliffe at his home, raised an impressive $2.2 million. According to Politico, this event became the largest gubernatorial fundraiser in Virginia’s history, attracting more than 350 donors.

Fundraising and advertising played a critical role in the outcome of the race. Spanberger out-raised her opponents, securing over $65 million compared to her opponents’ $35 million. Most of these funds were used for advertising, with Spanberger outspending her opponent by $25.6 million, spending $51.9 million compared to her opponent’s $26.3 million.

Democratic strategist Mally Smith, who previously served as a senior political and coalitions advisor for the Kamala Harris campaign in North Carolina, noted that rural Republican turnout in Virginia was unusually low. “If this continues to hold true, Democrats are going to have a great night up and down the ballot,” Smith said.

Earle-Sears had distanced herself from Trump after the 2020 election, and she appeared to have never forgiven him. In 2022, she expressed that voters wanted a different leader from Trump, even calling the former president a “liability to the mission.”

In August, several long-time Republican figures in Virginia privately expressed doubts about Earle-Sears’s chances of winning in November. A GOP operative, speaking under the condition of anonymity, stated, “This is 100 percent Glenn Youngkin’s fault for clearing the field by endorsing her right after the 2024 election.” The operative also mentioned that there were discussions about potential primary challengers to Sears, which Youngkin worked to prevent.

The last time a Republican candidate won the Virginia governor’s race while a Republican was in the White House was in 1973, when Mills E. Godwin Jr. won during Richard Nixon’s presidency.
