Arne Slot Reflects on Mohamed Salah’s Departure
Arne Slot, the current head coach of Liverpool, has expressed that he has no regrets regarding his management of Mohamed Salah, a player he describes as “one of a kind.” Despite speculation that a strained relationship between the two was a key factor in Salah’s decision to leave the club, Slot remains confident in his approach.
Salah is set to begin his farewell tour with a match against Manchester City in an FA Cup quarter-final. This comes after the 33-year-old announced his departure from Liverpool last week. His exit follows the termination of the final season of his contract at Anfield, allowing him to join another club on a free transfer just one year after signing a two-year deal worth £400,000 per week.
Many have pointed to a public disagreement between Salah and Slot as a possible reason for his decision. During this incident, Salah stated that the pair had “no relationship.” However, when asked if he felt any regret over his handling of the situation, Slot responded with a clear and firm stance.
“I look back at this season thinking that I made a few decisions that could have been better, but I’m not talking about this specific thing with Mo,” Slot said. “I don’t regret many things I did during a little longer than one-and-a-half years together. Again, the assumption that if he’s not playing that he wants to leave – that’s the assumption being made – then he would have left one-and-a-half years ago.”
Slot also referenced a previous instance where Salah did not play in a match against West Ham. He noted that at that time, he was not present, and Salah did not decide to leave the club.
“
The assumption is if you don’t play these games and all of a sudden want to leave, it is an assumption and maybe it is true or maybe it isn’t. But history has shown that he did not do that previously and had a great season after that.”
Preparing for the Future
As Liverpool looks ahead, Slot has confirmed that succession planning is already underway. He is actively involved in discussions about how to move forward without Salah, though he acknowledges the challenge of replacing such a unique talent.
“We are not starting to work on it now because we are constantly working on where we can improve,” Slot explained. “There is not a lot talked about this, but it is 88 minutes that Alexander Isak, Hugo Ekitike and Florian Wirtz were together on the pitch together. So let’s first find out and work out how that works together and that can give us so much more.”
Slot emphasized that no single player can replace Salah. “It is never one player who can replace Mo. Otherwise there would be 15 or 20 Mos and he is one of a kind, which is why he is so special. You cannot find a Mo replacement. Maybe you can, but he would not be available (to buy at a realistic fee).”
Looking Ahead
With the upcoming Champions League quarter-final against Paris Saint-Germain, Slot is focused on ensuring that Liverpool continues to perform at the highest level. While the loss of Salah will be significant, the club is determined to adapt and remain competitive.
The transition will not be easy, but with a strong focus on development and teamwork, Slot believes Liverpool can continue to thrive. As the team prepares for its next challenges, the legacy of Salah will remain a defining chapter in the club’s recent history.
